What can I expect from the PT test for the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I've heard there is a physical fitness test. What does the PT test include and how can I best prepare for it? Any tips from current cadets or applicants would be great!

The Physical Fitness Examination (PFE) for the Coast Guard Academy evaluates three main areas: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run.

1. Push-ups: A maximum of 60 push-ups in 2 minutes. The push-ups should be proper, maintaining a straight body position and full arm extension. When preparing, start with as many quality push-ups as you can do and gradually aim for higher repetitions.

2. Sit-ups: A maximum of 60 sit-ups in 2 minutes. You will have to have your fingers behind your ears and knees bent at a right angle. Start a sit-up and end with your elbows touching your knees. Start practicing sit-ups with correct form, and over time aim to increase your repetitions.

3. 1.5-mile run: This should be completed in a maximum of 12 minutes and 51 seconds. The goal is to build endurance, so a mix of long-distance and short, high-intensity interval training can be highly effective.

For effective physical preparation, it is recommended that you undertake a consistent fitness regimen involving endurance workouts, strength training, plenty of hydration, and a balanced diet.

Keep in mind that these are the minimum standards, and exceeding them will create a more competitive profile. Moreover, physical fitness is not only important for the application process but also for your training and service in the Coast Guard Academy. Therefore, try to perceive these fitness standards not merely as a challenge to overcome for the application but as a lifestyle to commit to. Good luck with your preparation!
