What sources are needed for the Naval Academy appointment?

I'm looking into the sources required for my application to the Naval Academy. Do I need recommendations from specific people or officials? I'm trying to make sure I have everything in order for when I apply.

To be considered for an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), you'll need to fulfill specific requirements. One of the most significant requirements is to secure a nomination.

Nominations are typically attained from one of the following sources:

1. A U.S. Representative or a U.S. Senator: Reach out to your local congressperson's office to inquire about their nomination process. Each senator and representative is allowed to have five constituents attending the Naval Academy at once. Each year they can nominate up to ten candidates per open slot, but eventually, the USNA will appoint only one of these nominees.

2. The Vice President: The VP can nominate applicants from anywhere in the United States. The process is competitive, so it doesn't hurt to apply to both your local representatives and the VP for a broader chance.

3. Presidential nomination: If you are a child of a Medal of Honor recipient or an active-duty or retired military service member, you are eligible for a Presidential nomination. The President can have 100 constituents in the Academy at once.

4. Other nominating authorities: ROTC/JROTC units, children of deceased or disabled veterans, children of persons classified as POW or MIA, Naval Academy Preparatory School, enlisted members of the Navy or Marine Corps, and several other less common sources.

Getting a nomination doesn't guarantee acceptance, but without one, your application won't move forward. Along with securing a nomination, you'll have to meet academic qualifications (high school transcript, class rank, SAT or ACT scores), physical fitness assessment (candidate fitness assessment), and medical qualifications (DoDMERB Medical Examination).

As for more personal recommendations or connections, you may need a recommendation letter as part of the nomination process from a senator or representative, but beyond this, the USNA does not ask for additional recommendation letters.

It's wise to start this process early, as it can take quite a bit of time to gather all required materials and meet all necessary criteria, given the nomination process's competitiveness. The application process is generally initiated in the spring of your junior year of high school and completed by January of your senior year.

Remember, keep your contact professional and polite. We're talking about an application to a federal service academy, and the officials you'll encounter will expect appropriate communication. Good luck with your application!
