What should be included in a Naval Academy candidate package?

I'm in the process of applying to the Naval Academy and want to ensure my candidate package is complete. What are the essential components or documents that I need to include in my application package?

The candidate package to the Naval Academy has several required parts. You’ll need to submit an online application, secure a nomination (most often from a Congressperson, Senator, or the Vice President), complete a medical examination, and demonstrate physical aptitude through the Candidate Fitness Assessment.

Here’s a bit more detail on each component:

1. Online Application: The online application includes your basic biographical information, an outline of your academic achievements, an account of your extracurricular involvement, and proof of your leadership roles or community service.

2. Nominations: Note that it's your responsibility to secure your nomination. Most candidates get their nominations from their state's Senators or Representative, or the Vice President. The sooner you start working on securing a nomination, the better.

3. Medical Examination: The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) is responsible for determining a candidate’s medical qualification for admission. Once you've started your application, the Naval Academy will notify DoDMERB, and they will schedule your exams.

4. Physical Aptitude: The Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) consists of six events which are used to gauge your physical fitness. The six events of the CFA are basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and 1-mile run. Guidelines for each event can be found on the Naval Academy's website.

5. Candidate Statements: These are essays that allow you to share your reasons for wanting to attend the Naval Academy and serve in the Navy or Marine Corps. They're a chance for you to share your personality, motivations, and experiences in a way that is beyond what you've already mentioned in your application.

6. Recommendation Letters: The online application specifically requires two teacher evaluations, with one from a math or science teacher and one from an English or social studies teacher.

7. Official Transcripts and Standardized Test Scores: Have your high school send an official transcript directly to the Naval Academy. Additionally, SAT or ACT scores should be sent directly by the testing agency.

Be very thorough with each part of the package, as that can increase your chance of acceptance. It's also helpful to check with the Naval Academy's Admissions office or website to ensure you're meeting every requirement, as updates or changes to the process may happen annually. Good luck with your application!
