How does the Naval Academy introduce students to aircraft carriers?

Considering a future at the Naval Academy and I'm interested in aircraft carriers. How do midshipmen get exposure to them? Are there specific programs or courses related to aircraft carriers?

At the U.S. Naval Academy, Midshipmen have the chance to really get a sense of how the Navy operates, including the opportunity to learn about aircraft carriers.

Firstly, the Naval Academy offers two summer training blocks for Midshipmen, and one of these is usually ship-based. During this training, Midshipmen are exposed to Navy ships, including aircraft carriers, and they gain a basic understanding of life on board a ship, the rigors of operating a naval vessel and how the crew functions.

Secondly, Midshipmen who wish to further study aircraft carriers can choose relevant academic paths. There are several relevant majors available at the Naval Academy for Midshipmen who have an interest in aircraft carriers, such as Aerospace Engineering or Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. These majors include courses on the design and functioning of aircraft carriers.

Thirdly, in their senior year, all Midshipmen participate in a program called PROTRAMID (Professional Training for Midshipmen), in which they spend time with each type of service the Navy and Marine corps offer, including aviation. Midshipmen often have the chance to land on an aircraft carrier during this segment of the program.

Finally, the Naval Academy has strong connections with alumni, many of whom have served on aircraft carriers. These connections allow Midshipmen to learn from those with firsthand experience, broadening their knowledge of aircraft carriers and other aspects of naval operations.

It's important to keep in mind that while the Naval Academy will provide you with a global overview and multi-dimensional learning about aircraft carriers, the more specific and hands-on training happens post-graduation, when you start your service assignment and specific training for it.
