What to expect during the Naval Academy Candidate Visitation Weekend?

I'm considering attending the Candidate Visitation Weekend at the Naval Academy. Can anyone share their experience or give insights into what happens during the weekend? How should I prepare for the visit?

Attending the Candidate Visitation Weekend at the Naval Academy is a fantastic opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what life at a service academy is like. Here's a general rundown of what you might expect.

The program typically spans several days and includes a wide range of activities. You'll likely be assigned to a midshipman who will act as your host for the weekend. You'll be able to experience Academy life firsthand by attending classes, dining in King Hall, touring Bancroft Hall (the midshipman dormitory), and possibly even participating in physical training sessions. It’s a time to get an immersive experience of being a midshipman, the routines, the discipline, and the camaraderie of communal living.

In terms of preparation, make sure to dress appropriately. For guys, you might want to bring a suit or nice slacks and a polo shirt or button-down shirt; ladies, you could consider a nice pair of slacks, a skirt, or a business-casual dress. Also, bring appropriate clothes for physical activities if applicable. Bring a notebook or something to take notes on, as you'll likely receive a lot of information during the visit.

Remember, it's your opportunity to ask questions and gain insights into your potential future life as a midshipman. You'll also be interacting with senior ranking officers and Academy staff, so remain professional in your conduct, address all officers properly, and say "sir" or "ma’am" as appropriate.

If you can, take the time to speak with current midshipmen and administrators about your interest in the Naval Academy. These interactions informally demonstrate your interest in the Academy and are a fantastic networking opportunity for you.

Remember this is as much a chance for them to get to know you as it is a chance for you to get to know them. Be yourself and enjoy the experience. Good luck!
