Opportunities for prior military in the civilian workforce?

Having a military background, I'm exploring job opportunities that are open to ex-military personnel. What sectors or roles are most accessible or accommodating for those with my background?

Former military personnel are often sought after by employers in many sectors of the civilian workforce due to the unique skill set they bring to the table. These skills can include leadership, discipline, ability to work under pressure, initiative, teamwork, and technical proficiency, to name a few.

One sector where ex-military personnel commonly find opportunities is in defense contracting. Companies that work with the Department of Defense often value the experience and security clearances that come with a military background.

Law enforcement is another sector that greatly values military experience and has a large representation of veterans. Roles in this field can range from local police officers to federal agencies like the FBI or Homeland Security.

Information technology is a growing field that offers many opportunities for veterans. If you have an IT background from your military service, that can be a valuable asset.

Project and operations management positions in a variety of industries are also well-suited to individuals with military experience. This is because these roles often require strong leadership skills, discipline, and the ability to work in high-pressure situations, all of which are cultivated in the military.

Healthcare could be another avenue, especially if you were involved in any sort of medical duties during your military service. This could range from clinical roles, all the way to healthcare administration.

Finally, it could be worth looking into companies which actively recruit veterans. Many leading companies, like Amazon and Lockheed Martin, have veteran hiring programs and offer resources to assist with the transition to civilian employment.

Remember, your military experience has equipped you with a set of skills that can be highly desirable to many employers. It's about finding a role where those skills align and being able to effectively communicate the value of your unique experiences. It's also frequent for veterans to continue their education or receive training in a particular field to facilitate their transition. Best of luck in your search!
