Does the Naval Academy compete in Division 1 football?

I've heard that the Naval Academy has a football team, but I'm not sure about the level of competition. Do they play in Division 1, and how competitive is their team compared to other schools? Any insights on the game day atmosphere?

Yes, the United States Naval Academy (often known as Navy) does indeed compete in NCAA Division I football. They are a member of the American Athletic Conference, also known as The American, which includes other competitive schools like the University of Cincinnati, the University of Central Florida, and the University of South Florida.

Traditionally, Navy has a fairly competitive team. While predominantly known for their fierce rivalry with the United States Military Academy (Army), affectionately known as the Army-Navy game, they've also had seasons where they've competed in bowl games, so their competitive standing in the football world is well-established.

As for the game day atmosphere, many say it's unparalleled and full of tradition. From the midshipman march-on, where all the academy's students march in formation onto the field, to the singing of the fight song and the iconic Navy Blue & Gold, the atmosphere is vibrant and steeped in pride and patriotism. The camaraderie and spirit on display during these games are often noted to be a highlight for both players and spectators alike, whether you're a midshipman, alumnus, or just a fan of the team.
