What are the rules for freshmen at the Naval Academy?

Are there any special rules or regulations that freshmen at the Naval Academy have to follow? I'd like to know what adjustments I might need to prepare for if I get in.

Yes, freshmen at the United States Naval Academy (USNA), referred to as "plebes," need to adhere to a set of specific rules and traditions, primarily focused on discipline, hierarchy, and character formation. This is designed to introduce students to the military lifestyle and build camaraderie among the incoming class.

First, plebes go through Plebe Summer, a highly rigorous and challenging six-week indoctrination period before their academic year begins. This time is usually filled with physical training, sailing, swimming, marching, drilling, and Navy terminology instruction.

In their day-to-day life, plebes are required to memorize and recite certain information, such as Reef Points (the handbook for Naval Academy midshipmen) knowledge, menus for each meal, and the day's schedule. Plebes also traditionally ask for permission to perform certain tasks, like entering a room or speaking to upperclassmen.

The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) applies to all midshipmen, and serious infractions, which can range from honor code violations to criminal activity, are dealt with according to its stipulations.

In terms of limitations, plebes do not have as many liberties as their upperclassmen, such as owning a car, moving freely on weekends, or wearing civilian clothes on campus. Note that these restrictions lessen as midshipmen progress in their years at the academy.

Lastly, plebes participate in different extra duties, like special cleaning details or messenger services, and they are expected to display the highest level of military bearing and respect towards upperclassmen and staff.

The plebe year is challenging, but it's designed to help midshipmen adapt to the demands and disciplines of naval service, fostering resilience and team spirit. Once you accept the commitment to go through this process, you will benefit from the rich tradition and disciplined environment that the USNA provides. Remember, success at the academy requires both physical and mental stamina. Good luck with your application process!
