What are the requirements for high school students applying to the Naval Academy?

I'm a junior interested in the Naval Academy and I'd like to know more about the high school requirements. Specifically, what courses should I focus on and how important is my GPA? Any advice would be awesome!

The United States Naval Academy has a rigorous application process that demands more than just strong grades. They look for well-rounded individuals, with a balance of academics, athletics, and leadership.

As for academics, the Naval Academy recommends applicants complete four years of math (including calculus), four years of English, one year of chemistry, one year of physics, two years of a foreign language, and one year of U.S. History for your high school coursework. Having a solid background in calculus and physics is particularly important since all midshipmen—regardless of their intended major—are required to take these courses at the academy.

Your GPA is indeed crucial because the Naval Academy is quite competitive academically. Simply meeting the minimum academic requirements doesn't guarantee admission. The academy typically looks for students in the top 20% of their high school class.

Sports or continuous physical activity is also a significant element. All midshipmen are required to participate in sports. This can be varsity letters, club sports, or community athletics.

Additionally, leadership experience is quite important. This could be anything from school council, community service, Boy/Girl Scouts, or being the captain of a sports team.

Beyond academics and extracurriculars, you'll also need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment, which includes various physical tests. Also, you will have to secure a nomination, usually from a U.S. Congressman or Senator.

Finally, bear in mind that the Naval Academy seeks students who are motivated to serve in the Navy or Marine Corps. This motivation is often reflected in your interviews and essays.

It's also a good idea to contact your local Naval Academy Blue and Gold Officer. They can provide valuable insight and assistance throughout the application process. Remember, the journey to the Naval Academy is rigorous and requires determination and commitment. Keep up the hard work!
