Can anyone share details about the typical length of degree programs at the Naval Academy? I'm trying to plan out my future and would like to know how long I should expect to study there. Thanks for any information!
At the United States Naval Academy, all students pursue a four-year undergraduate degree program. The curriculum at the academy is rigorous and encompasses a broad base of subjects, including both technical (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and non-technical fields (humanities and social sciences).
Every midshipman is required to complete a standardized core of 4 years of humanities and social sciences, and 4 years of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering courses. This is irrespective of the academic major that the midshipman chooses. The major courses typically start in earnest during sophomore year, after the core freshman classes are completed.
Upon successful completion of the program, students earn a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned as officers in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps. Following graduation, they are required to serve at least five years of active-duty service.
Note, the total time commitment, including your education and mandatory service, would amount to at least nine years. It's a significant commitment, but the experience and benefits offered by the academy can be truly rewarding.
