How can I arrange an official visit to the Naval Academy?

I'm interested in visiting the Naval Academy officially to learn more about their programs. How do I go about scheduling this? Is there an application process and what should I expect during the visit?

Officially visiting the United States Naval Academy offers a unique opportunity to understand what life as a Midshipman would be like. Typically, prospective students can schedule a visit by going through the Naval Academy Admissions website. When scheduling, remember to plan well in advance and consider available dates as these tours can fill up quickly.

The Navy has a program called the Candidate Visit Weekend (CVW) which is intended for students who have started their application to the Naval Academy. Here, you'll get a firsthand look into life at the Academy, as you stay with a Midshipman host for the weekend, attend classes, and experience daily Midshipman life. Usually, you need to have entered your preliminary application and be in your Junior year of high school to be considered.

The Naval Academy also offers walking tours conducted by Midshipmen for prospective students and the general public. You will have the chance to tour the campus, known as the "Yard", see the Bancroft Hall dormitory, main chapel, and other historical sites.

During your visit, you'll attend briefings, have meals with current students, and have time to ask questions about student life, academics, and the Navy experience as a whole. It’s a great time to explore how you see yourself fitting into campus culture and if the intense rigor of the Naval Academy matches your career and education goals. Be prepared with questions since this is your opportunity to gather as much information as you can.

Remember, whether it’s an organized event like CVW or a regular tour, an official visit requires preparation and dedication to make the most of it. Treat it like an interview - you should be professional, punctual, and dress appropriately.

And lastly, not related to the tour but important if serious about attending, it's crucial to start the Congressional nomination process as early as possible, as this is a required part of the application. Good luck!
