What's the entrance process for visiting the Naval Academy as a pedestrian?

I'm planning a visit to the Naval Academy and wondered how to go about it as a pedestrian. Is there anything specific I need to know or bring for the pedestrian entrance? Any tips from those who've been?

Sure, a visit to the Naval Academy is a great opportunity to explore its historic grounds and get a feel for the campus culture. As a visitor, you’ll gain pedestrian access to the Naval Academy through its gate on Prince George Street. They tend not to have an overly complicated process but there are a few points you need to remember.

When you visit, bring a government-issued photo ID; this entails a driver's license for most people, but a passport or state ID card will work as well. Upon entrance, you'll have to show your ID and go through a security check, comparable to airport security. This includes a bag check, so avoid bringing restricted items such as weapons.

It can be helpful to plan your visit in advance. Most of the campus is open for visitors to explore on their own but there are also guided tours available. Public tours of the Yard can be arranged through the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center.

Remember also, that certain areas may not be accessible during specific times due to events or security needs. It's worthwhile checking the Academy's visitor website or calling ahead before your visit to confirm times and requirements. This will ensure you don’t miss out on anything or get turned away.

Lastly, while wandering around the Yard, be aware that it is a military institution, so respect the Midshipmen, their procedures, and their spaces. For instance, avoid walking on any grassy areas unless specifically allowed - these are traditionally off-limit to avoid wear and tear.

Enjoy your visit! The Naval Academy is a place of rich history and tradition, and there's a lot to see and learn.
