What are the phone rules at the Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy and I'm curious about their phone policy. How strict are the rules regarding phone usage, and how does it affect daily life as a cadet? Any insights would be helpful!

The United States Naval Academy has certain restrictions on phone usage, especially for plebes, or first-year students. Plebes are not allowed to have personal cell phones during the summer training known as Plebe Summer. However, once the academic year starts, plebes are allowed to have their cellphones but usage is heavily restricted to weekend liberty periods.

The policies ease up as you advance through your years at the academy. For instance, once you become a Youngster (sophomore), usage restrictions are somewhat relaxed, but there are still limits particularly during the day when you're encouraged to focus on your duties and studies.

The intention behind these rules is to encourage freshmen to completely immerse themselves in their new environment and to promote focus, discipline, and camaraderie among classmates.

Smartphone rules might vary slightly from year to year, and it's always best to check with an admissions representative for the most current information. Also, keep in mind that these restrictions might not only apply to phone usage, but internet usage and TV viewing as well. The goal is to encourage cadets to focus on their studies, training, and community.
