What kinds of psychology programs are available at the Naval Academy?

I'm interested in both military service and psychology. Can anyone shed light on whether the Naval Academy offers any courses or majors related to psychology? Would love to hear about any related opportunities there.

The U.S. Naval Academy offers an undergraduate major in Psychology. This program emphasizes the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. The goal of the curriculum is to give us the necessary tools and knowledge to understand human behavior, whether they pursue further education in psychology or not.

Courses in this major cover a wide range of topics including cognitive processes, learning theories, social psychology, health psychology, abnormal psychology, and sensation & perception. They also offer a course in Operational Psychology that focuses on the applications of psychological principles to military operations, which could be particularly interesting and relevant given your interest in combining military service and psychology.

As a student in the Psych program, you would be able to take advantage of the faculty’s research expertise in various areas of psychology. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in research activities, and often there are opportunities to present research findings at professional and scientific meetings.

The Psychology Department also has the Psi Chi chapter, an international honor society dedicated to advancing the science of psychology. This can provide networking opportunities, scholarships, and a chance to showcase your achievements!

Remember that at the Naval Academy, you also receive training that prepares you for leadership positions in the Navy or Marine Corps, and the psychology program will provide additional unique insights into human behavior and leadership. Therefore, a psychology degree from the Naval Academy can provide a great foundation for a military or civilian career.

Keep in mind that the application process for the U.S. Naval Academy is competitive, so it's important to maintain strong academics and demonstrate leadership potential in your application. Best of luck!
