What does the PT workout at the Naval Academy involve?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy and want to prepare for the physical training. What can I expect from the PT workouts and what level of fitness is required to thrive in them?

The physical program at the U.S. Naval Academy is comprehensive and designed to enhance a midshipman's physical fitness throughout their four years of instruction. The program includes a variety of activities, the specific ones you could experience depending on your year of study and your specific physical strengths and needs.

To begin, all midshipmen, regardless of year, participate in Physical Education (PE) classes where activities range from swimming and boxing to wrestling and gymnastics. Naval Academy midshipmen also complete a Physical Readiness Test (PRT) every semester. The PRT consists of three components: a 1.5-mile run, 2-minute push-ups, and 2-minute curl-ups. Thresholds for each exercise vary based on gender and age, with the standards available on the Academy's official website.

Moreover, Plebe Summer is a rigorous seven-week training program that all incoming freshmen undertake. It includes intense physical training, such as long runs, swimming, martial arts, and obstacle courses. These sessions are combined with classroom learning and practical application of naval skills. Plebe Summer is designed to transition civilians into midshipmen.

In terms of what level of fitness is required to thrive, the Naval Academy recommends being in good shape upon entering, especially as Plebe Summer can be very physically demanding. Future midshipmen should work on their endurance running, swimming ability, as well as building their strength in exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups.

Remember, the goal is not just to pass the PRT but to meet or exceed "Excellent" standards, as well-rounded physical fitness will serve you not only during your training but also in your potential career in the Navy. It's about consistency in maintaining and improving your fitness levels. But do recall, balance is important. Physical training is an integral part of the Naval Academy experience, but so are academics and leadership development.
