What are the recommended classes for applying to the Naval Academy?

I'm planning to apply to the Naval Academy and want to make sure I'm taking the right classes in high school. Does anyone know what the recommended courses are to improve my chances for acceptance?

The U.S. Naval Academy recommends a strong foundation in math and science since their curriculum has a heavy emphasis on these subjects. However, the academy also values well-rounded applicants who have shown dedication and proficiency in a variety of subjects.

Here's a general list of courses that you should consider:

1. Mathematics: Having four years of math including strong coursework in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry is crucial. A course in calculus would be highly advantageous too as it demonstrates readiness for college-level math.

2. Science: Four years of science with significant lab experience is recommended. This should include physics and chemistry, and a course in biology can also be beneficial.

3. English: Four years of English with a heavy emphasis on writing skills and literature.

4. Social Studies: At least two years of social studies, including a U.S. history course.

5. Foreign Language: At least two years of a single foreign language.

6. Physical Education: Given that physical fitness is fundamental in the military, ongoing physical education classes or involvement in sports is also beneficial.

Remember, these are recommended guidelines and not strict prerequisites. It's advised to take challenging courses, such as honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) whenever possible to demonstrate your ability to handle rigorous coursework.

Additionally, participating in extracurricular activities, particularly those demonstrating leadership, service, or athletic ability can enhance your application.

Lastly, keep in mind that the Naval Academy's selection process is holistic and, in addition to your academic performance, they will consider your character, leadership potential, and physical aptitude. So the classes you take are only one part of the equation – make sure to give due importance to these other factors as well. Good luck!
