Understanding Student Demographics at the Naval Academy

I'm trying to get a sense of the student demographics at the Naval Academy. Are there any particular trends or statistics worth knowing about the diversity and background of students who attend?

The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is dedicated to providing education and training for its students, known as midshipmen, while also aiming to represent the diverse makeup of the country.

As of the 2024-2025 academic year, the Naval Academy has about 4,600 midshipmen, split nearly evenly across all four years. Around 26% are women, which is slightly higher than many other service academies. Racial diversity is less pronounced, but the Academy is working hard to increase diverse representation: about 11% of midshipmen are Black and approximately 10% are Hispanic.

Geographically, midshipmen represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and even international students from various allied nations. All midshipmen are on full scholarship and receive a monthly stipend in exchange for their commitment of at least five years of service following graduation.

The midshipmen primarily study technical subjects (around 65% of majors), such as Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics, to align with the Academy's mission of producing leaders for the naval service. However, they have around 25 majors to choose from, including humanities and social science degrees.

In terms of diversity initiatives, the Naval Academy has various clubs and groups aimed at promoting the recognition and understanding of different cultures, such as the Korean-American Midshipman Club, the Club of the Americas, and the Women’s Glee Club.
