I'm a high school junior considering applying to the Naval Academy and I'm curious about the summer boot camp. What should I expect if I attend, and how demanding is it physically and mentally?
The Naval Academy's Plebe Summer, widely known as its "summer boot camp," is designed to transition incoming students into the military lifestyle. Keep in mind, the program is intense and fast-paced by design, to introduce a disciplined lifestyle and instill comradery among the students.
Physically, expect to engage in a variety of activities to test and cultivate your stamina, strength, and agility. Repair your running shoes, because you'll be doing plenty of it, along with calisthenics, swimming tests, obstacle courses, and regular PT (Physical Training) sessions.
The mental challenges are just as rigorous. The purpose of Plebe Summer goes beyond physical fitness--it's meant to cultivate character, teach discipline, develop teamwork, and instill a sense of Naval ethos. You'll be learning about subjects like navigation, seamanship, and military customs, often under high-stress situations.
The shared challenge of Plebe Summer helps to build a tight-knit, mutually supportive class, a relationship that extends beyond the summer and into your time at the Academy. Although it will undoubtedly be challenging, the experience is designed to mold you into being a midshipman and a future officer. So while it is demanding, many students find it to be a rewarding and transformative period.
If you decide to take part in the summer boot camp, do some physical conditioning ahead of time to prepare your body for the challenging workouts. Also, become comfortable with taking instruction and working as part of a team, as many of the activities and classes will require these skills.
Remember though, every experience varies and each class has unique aspects to their Plebe Summer. It ultimately depends on the mentality you go in with and how much you're prepared to learn and grow from the intensive training.
