What is the Naval Academy summer training program like?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy, and I'm curious about their summer training program. What can I expect in terms of activities and structure? Are there any specific skills or preparations I should focus on?

The U.S. Naval Academy's summer training program, also known as Plebe Summer, is a rigorous 7-week program designed to help incoming students (or plebes) transition from civilian to military life. This program usually begins at the end of June or early July.

During Plebe Summer, you're likely to engage in various physical and mental training activities. These might include challenging obstacle courses, survival swimming, sailing exercises, martial arts and weapons instructions, as well as classroom instructions on topics ranging from the Navy's organizational structure to elements of seamanship.

As for the structure of the program, every day is tightly scheduled, starting early in the morning and ending late in the evening. There's minimal free time, as the program is designed to keep you busy and engaged.

In terms of preparation, physical fitness is a significant aspect. Regular running, swimming, and body-weight exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups could assist in getting in shape. Keeping a positive mindset and being open to new experiences are also key.

Moreover, brushing up on the basics of naval history and customs might be helpful. However, the program aims to train you from scratch, so don't sweat it if you're not an expert in these areas before you arrive. Remember, the program is designed to challenge you, but it's about growth and learning, not perfection.

Lastly, remember that while Plebe Summer is intense and challenging, it is also a time of considerable personal growth and bonding with your classmates as you all undergo this transformative experience together.
