Do salaries vary by major for Naval Academy graduates?

I'm curious about the starting salaries of Naval Academy graduates. Does your major significantly impact salary right out of the Academy, or is it more based on your role in the Navy?

After graduating from the Naval Academy, most graduates serve in the Navy or Marine Corps, so their initial income is primarily determined by their military rank and not by their major or role. As a fresh graduate, you will typically commission as an Ensign in the Navy, or a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. The monthly basic salary is the same across the board, and it increases with rank progression and years of service.

However, there may be additional allowances and benefits, such as housing or hazardous duty pay, that might cause some variation in the overall income depending on the nature of your duty assignment. Furthermore, once you have fulfilled your service commitment and choose to pursue a civilian career, the major you pursued at the Academy could potentially impact your earning potential, depending on the field you enter.

As an example, if you studied Mechanical Engineering and transition into a similar engineering industry after your service, you may see different salaries compared to a fellow graduate who studied English and moved into publishing or education. However, remember that those career paths and salaries are influenced by more than just your major; demand in the job market, location, and your skill level are also significant considerations.
