What is the undergraduate profile like at the Naval Academy?

I'm trying to get an idea of what makes up the undergraduate profile at the Naval Academy. What kind of students do they typically admit, in terms of academics, extracurriculars, and personal characteristics?

The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) admits students who exhibit not only academic prowess but also exceptional leadership potential and physical capabilities.

In terms of academics, the middle 50% of SAT scores for the Class of 2024 (most recent profile available) were 630-760 for the Reading and Writing section and 620-750 for the Math section. The middle 50% of ACT scores were 27-34 for English and 27-34 for Math. About 95% of the incoming class ranked in the top 20% of their high school class.

Regarding extracurricular involvement, it's clear from the makeup of the student body that the Naval Academy values leadership and service. The majority of incoming midshipmen have participated in varsity athletics, with many having served as team captains. Participation in student government, clubs, and other leadership roles are also common amongst USNA students. Involvement in organizations such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, particularly achieving high-ranking distinctions like Eagle Scout or Gold Award, is viewed positively as well.

Physical fitness is an essential part of the application process. All applicants must pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment, which includes a basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run, in order to demonstrate physical readiness for the academy's rigorous physical program.

Finally, personal characteristics such as integrity, love for the country, and the determination to serve are vital. This commitment is more than just words. Upon graduation, midshipmen are required to serve at least five years of active duty in the Navy or Marine Corps.

Remember, the Naval Academy's admissions process is highly competitive, and having these characteristics doesn't guarantee admission. Each year, many qualified and deserving candidates are not offered an appointment. The USNA looks for students who will excel in their various programs and those who demonstrate the highest potential for future professional growth and leadership.
