How does the Naval Academy handle volleyball recruiting?

I'm interested in playing volleyball at the Naval Academy and was wondering about their recruiting process. What are they looking for in a recruit, and are there any specific showcases or camps I should attend to get noticed?

The Naval Academy has a relatively unique approach to athletics recruiting due to their status as a service academy. They have to consider not just a player's athletic performance, but also their academic achievements and readiness to serve in the military post-graduation.

From an athletic perspective, college coaches are always looking for athletes who demonstrate a high skill level and excellent game knowledge. Showcase your abilities through both high school and club volleyball, but also focus on leadership abilities such as communication and resilience on and off the court. It can be beneficial to create a highlight reel showcasing your best moments from matches or tournaments, with a focus on diverse skills such as serving, blocking, setting, hitting or defensive plays.

For the academic side, you should be striving for good grades and a rigorous curriculum. The Naval Academy values students who can manage both academics and athletics. They also highly value strong character traits such as honesty, accountability and respectability, which align with their honor code.

It's important to remember that as a service academy, there is an expectation of military service following graduation from the Naval Academy. Athletic recruits are not exempt from this, so coaches will be looking for recruits who demonstrate a commitment to service, leadership, and physical fitness.

Naval Academy volleyball recruits, like all athletes at service academies, need to clear several steps in their application process that athletes at traditional colleges do not. This includes securing a nomination from a governmental authority, passing the Candidate Fitness Assessment, and receiving a medical qualification.

The Naval Academy holds summer sports camps every year, including a camp for volleyball. This can be a great opportunity for exposure, as you'll be able to train in front of the Naval Academy coaching staff. Make sure to keep in touch with the coaching staff through email or phone calls, highlighting your interest in the institution and discussing any upcoming tournaments or games that they could attend to see you play. A proactive approach can help you stand out.

Lastly, do ensure you meet the NCAA eligibility requirements to play Division I sports. Given the service commitment following graduation, it's also wise to consider if this path is one you are truly passionate about. Good luck with your volleyball endeavors and potential future at the Naval Academy!
