Is ocean engineering a major at the Naval Academy?

I'm interested in pursuing a career in ocean engineering. Does the Naval Academy offer this as a major, and what are the opportunities like in this field if you graduate from there?

Yes, the United States Naval Academy (USNA) offers an undergraduate major in Ocean Engineering. This program integrates all the basic engineering sciences, but it uniquely applies these fundamental concepts to design and analysis related to the marine environment, naval ships, and related systems. The curriculum is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), which ensures a high standard of education.

As a graduate of this program, you would be well-prepared for a variety of rewarding career opportunities. In the Navy, for instance, you could serve as a Surface Warfare Officer, Submarine Officer, or Naval Flight Officer, among other positions. These roles can give you hands-on experience with ocean engineering in action and provide amazing leadership opportunities.

On the civilian side, ocean engineers often work in areas that relate to coastal processes, marine propulsion systems, underwater acoustics, and marine environmental systems. They can also work in the design and construction of offshore structures and systems for marine transportation, and they are often employed by industries such as hydrocarbon extraction and renewable energy. In addition to this, the USNA's strong reputation can give you a significant advantage in the job market.

If you are interested in continuing your education, many Ocean Engineering graduates also go on to pursue advanced degrees in various engineering disciplines, oceanography, and other related fields. Some also attend law school or business school.

For hands-on experience, there are many field opportunities at the USNA, such as research cruises aboard the yard patrol craft, the Neeskay research vessel, or the Blue Heron research vessel. In addition, the capstone design projects will allow you to apply your classroom knowledge to real-world problems.

Keep in mind though that all Naval Academy graduates are required to serve in the marine for a certain number of years after graduation. You should be prepared for this commitment if you decide to attend the USNA.
