How do I start the process for applying to the Naval Academy?

I'm a high school junior and am seriously considering applying to the Naval Academy. Can someone explain the application process, like important deadlines and what materials I need to gather? Any tips for making my application stand out?

It's wonderful that you're considering the Naval Academy. There are multiple steps to the application process and some pieces that set it apart from most civilian institutions.

1. Preliminary Application: This is the first step in the application process, and it opens each year on April 1. The preliminary application identifies the basic eligibility criteria and looks into your academic performance, standardized tests, athleticism, and leadership ability. If eligible, you will receive a candidate number.

2. Nomination: All applicants must obtain a nomination from an authorized source, such as a Congressman, Senator, the Vice President, or the President. You'll need to contact the respective offices for their specific procedures as these can vary greatly. Many offices have application deadlines in the early fall, so it's a good idea to start this as soon as possible.

3. Official Application: If your preliminary application and nomination are approved, you'll complete a full application, including your academic and medical records, as well as two essays and an interview with a Blue and Gold Officer, a regional representative who's a Naval Academy graduate.

4. Standardized Test Scores: The Naval Academy considers either SAT or ACT scores. Super scoring, which considers the highest score from each section across different test dates, is practiced at the Naval Academy. If you've taken any AP tests, you should report those scores as well.

5. Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA): The CFA includes several physical tasks to be completed sequentially. It's scored on a pass/fail basis but still contributes to your overall candidate score. The results need to be submitted by an official recorder, such as a PE teacher or coach.

As for standing out, your involvement in extracurricular activities will be crucial. Ideally, these activities will show your leadership skills and dedication to service, whether that's through student organizations, sports teams, or community service projects. If you've held a significant leadership position, like club president or team captain, be sure to highlight this in your application.

Moreover, your essays present an opportunity to showcase your personal passions and why you're particularly interested in serving in the Navy. Remember, specificity and personal stories will make your essays more compelling.

Finally, due to the highly selective nature of the Naval Academy, starting early with your preparations and maintaining a strong academic profile will be beneficial.

Remember, the selection process takes into consideration the "whole person," including academic achievements, character, leadership ability, physical fitness, and medical qualifications.

Good luck with your application process!
