How is studying music at the U.S. Naval Academy?

I'm really interested in pursuing music, but with a military twist. Does the U.S. Naval Academy offer opportunities to study music? What kind of musical programs or activities can I expect if I decide to enroll?

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) does have opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing music, say, alongside their military training. While they don't offer a dedicated music major, they do have a Music Electives Program where you can take different courses in music theory, history of music, and applied music (read - instrument lessons or ensemble coaching).

Moreover, USNA's music program includes several ensembles that both musicians and non-musicians can participate in. These ensembles encompass a wide range of genres, from classical to contemporary, and include a Glee Club, Drum and Bugle Corps, the Trident Brass Band, the Pipes and Drums, the Gospel Choir, and the Chapel Choir, among others. In addition, the Midshipman Instrumental Activities department coordinates the USNA Band, the jazz band (The Next Wave), the Wind Ensemble, and the String Ensemble.

These opportunities can provide you with a unique blend of discipline, teamwork, and creativity that fuses well with the Naval Academy's mission to uphold the highest traditions of the Navy and Marine Corps. Remember, balancing time between military training and extracurriculars can be demanding, but a commitment to music in this setting can be an enriching and fulfilling part of your academy experience.
