What is the focus of the submarine program at the Naval Academy?

I'm curious about the submarine training offered at the Naval Academy. Does it prepare you well for a future in submarine service? Are there special courses or experiences provided for students interested in submarines?

The U.S. Naval Academy offers a unique opportunity for students interested in submarine service, including a solid foundation of technical knowledge.

While the Naval Academy itself doesn't have a specialized submarine training program, the curriculum and experiences provided equip students well for such a path. The Academy's core curriculum is heavy in math and sciences, and every Midshipman, regardless of major, will take multiple semesters of math, chemistry, physics, and engineering. This provides a strong technical foundation that is invaluable in submarine operations.

Those who want to go deeper into the subject might choose to major in something relevant, like Nuclear Engineering or Ocean Engineering, as submarines rely heavily on nuclear propulsion and operate in challenging oceanic environments.

While at the Academy, students will get a taste of life in a submarine during their summer training. One of their summers will be dedicated to a cruise on a naval vessel, and for those interested in submarines, there will generally be an option to spend this period on a submarine. This will give you a firsthand look at submarine operations, introduce you to the tight-knit culture of the submarine community, and provide the opportunity to see a submarine in operation while underway.

After graduation, those selected for submarine service will attend the Naval Nuclear Power School, and eventually, a hands-on training period on a working reactor at the Nuclear Power Training Unit. After that, they will attend Submarine Officer Basic Course before finally being assigned to a submarine.

It's worth noting that only about 16% of each class (around 200 Midshipmen) is selected for submarine service, and this portion is even smaller for female Midshipmen due to berth space on submarines. However, those who are selected generally express immense satisfaction in their chosen career path and find their time at USNA well prepared them.

In essence, the Naval Academy does provide a solid academic foundation and initial exposure to submarine service; however, the actual specialist training occurs post-graduation.
