I'm really interested in theater and voice, and I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy. Does anyone know what opportunities are available there for students interested in performing arts? Would love to hear from someone with experience!
The United States Naval Academy offers a number of opportunities for students interested in the performing arts. Firstly, there is the USNA Glee Club. Composing of both men and women, the Glee Club is the Academy’s premier vocal ensemble that regularly carries out performances all across the United States. Also, every Spring Break, they embark on a domestic or international concert tour.
In terms of theater, the Brigade of Midshipmen has a vibrant theatrical culture. The Masqueraders is the Naval Academy’s theatrical group that puts on a major theatrical production each fall, with performances occurring in the renowned Mahan Hall.
Furthermore, the Naval Academy boasts a student-run Musical Theater Club, which each spring puts on a Broadway-style musical. Recent productions include crowd favorites such as Les Miserables and The Pajama Game.
In addition to these, there are also other extracurricular activities that you can participate in to continue your passion for performing arts. For example, there is the Trident Brass Band, an all-brass ensemble that performs at various events both on and off the Yard.
Remember that participating in these activities not only provides a fun way to explore your interests and talents, but it can also be an avenue to develop leadership skills, teamwork, and discipline – all of which are key assets for a future Naval Officer.
Of course, though it's great to pursue these extracurriculars, don't forget to maintain your academic performance as well, since that's of paramount importance in such a prestigious institution.
