I've been climbing for a while and am thinking of applying to the United States Naval Academy. Does anyone know what the Climbing Club is like there? Is it mostly casual, or does it get competitive? Any info would be appreciated!
It's great to hear you're interested in the United States Naval Academy and also have a passion for climbing. As you may know, the Naval Academy has a variety of clubs that cater to a wide range of interests, including the Climbing Club. Here is what I know about it.
The Climbing Club at the Naval Academy aims to introduce students to the sport in a safe and controlled environment. While some club members are experienced climbers like yourself, others are new to the sport. So, the difficulty level usually spans from beginner to advanced routes in order to cater to everyone's abilities and interests.
The club's focus is primarily on participation and helping each other to improve, so it's more on the casual side. However, they do take part in some competitive events, mostly intercollegiate climbing competitions both regional and national – they've even brought home some titles. So, if you're interested in competing, there would definitely be opportunities for you to do so.
Club activities mainly include regular practice sessions, club meetings, and trips, including indoor climbing, outdoor climbing, and trips to local gyms. Also, they occasionally conduct special events and workshops to educate members about climbing safety and techniques.
That being said, it should also be noted that like all activities at the Naval Academy, the main thing expected of participants is respect for one another, the climbing community, and nature. I hope you find this information helpful and best of luck with your application!
