What are the graduation requirements for the United States Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the United States Naval Academy and want to understand what it takes to graduate. Could anyone provide details on the requirements? Are there specific academic or physical benchmarks you need to meet?

Graduating from the United States Naval Academy requires successfully completing a variety of academic, military, and physical programs.

In terms of academics, every Midshipman must complete a basic course sequence that includes courses in engineering, science, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences. These core courses are essential for all students, regardless of your chosen major. Most of the major coursework and core classwork will account for around 140 semester hours of course credit.

Physical requirements at the Naval Academy are challenging. Midshipmen participate in physical education classes each semester, ranging from personal conditioning and boxing to sailing and swimming. Swimming is a particularly vital skill, as the Navy requires each Midshipman to be a proficient swimmer before graduating. Each candidate must pass various physical readiness tests which include events such as push-ups, sit-ups, and running. The Physical Readiness Test and Physical Fitness Assessment, which include activities like push-ups, curl-ups, and 1.5-mile runs, are conducted twice a year.

The United States Naval Academy also stresses leadership and professional development. As future Navy and Marine Corps officers, Midshipmen are expected to abide by the Honor Concept (a code of conduct emphasizing integrity and honesty) and excel in moral, mental, and physical development.

In addition, Midshipmen participate in summer training programs.

Please remember that graduation from the United States Naval Academy also entails a mandatory service commitment. Upon graduation, a Bachelor of Science degree is conferred, and you will be commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy or a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. This commitment is minimally five years but can be longer depending on the specific career path.
