What is the Ocean Engineering program like at the United States Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the United States Naval Academy, and I'm really interested in ocean engineering. Can anyone share insights or experiences about this program? How does it prepare students for future careers?

The Ocean Engineering program at the United States Naval Academy is a unique discipline that combines elements of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering and applies them to the oceanic environment. This is quite a distinct major, and it prepares the midshipmen to deal with the challenges related to the use and exploration of the world's oceans.

As part of the program, you'll get to study core areas like hydrodynamics, structural mechanics, ocean wave mechanics, and oceanography. Since the Naval Academy emphasizes a hands-on approach, you can expect to engage in real-world engineering projects. For example, students in the Ocean Engineering major can participate in the design and fabrication of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), environmental modeling and analysis projects, and coastal structure design projects. These technical experiences equip students with the ability to start designing and implementing engineering solutions immediately after graduation.

In terms of career preparation, the program equips you with both the academic knowledge and practical experience necessary for a variety of naval careers. Graduates go on to serve in different capacities within the Navy, such as Submarine Warfare Officers, Surface Warfare Officers, or Civil Engineer Corps Officers. Others have pursued civilian careers in marine construction, offshore oil recovery, and environmental consultancy.

On top of the rigorous academic program, being at the Naval Academy means you receive leadership training and character development that will help you excel in any professional environment. With the skills and experiences you gain, you’ll be well-prepared not just to excel in your naval or civilian career, but also to make valuable contributions to the field of ocean engineering.
