What are the physical requirements for the United States Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the United States Naval Academy and was wondering about the physical requirements. How fit do I need to be, and what specific tests or standards must I meet before applying? Any tips for preparation would be appreciated.

Applicants to the US Naval Academy are indeed required to meet physical standards to ensure they're fit to meet the demanding physical rigors of Academy life and beyond. The physical requirements are gauged through the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), a test that consists of six events:

1. Basketball Throw - This measures upper body strength and coordination. You'll throw a basketball from a kneeling position for maximum distance.

2. Pull-ups/Flexed Arm Hang - This measures arm and shoulder girdle strength. Males must complete pull-ups, whereas females have a choice between pull-ups and flexed arm hang.

3. Shuttle Run - This is a short-distance sprint that measures your speed and agility.

4. Crunches - This evaluates abdominal strength. You must do as many crunches as possible within a two-minute window.

5. Push-ups - Again, this is a test of upper body strength. You'll perform as many push-ups as you can in two minutes.

6. One-mile run - Here, your overall cardiovascular fitness is tested.

Your raw scores from each of these components are converted to a 0-100 scale and, except for the basketball throw, are gender and age-normed.

To prepare for the CFA, start focusing on running, calisthenics (body-weight exercises), and building upper body strength. Working on these areas with consistency should help to improve your performance. It's recommended that candidates practice the exact tests they'll be doing to become familiar with them and adequately prepare.

Remember, fitness is not all about the physical exercises - healthy nutrition is also important. It's crucial to eat balanced meals, stay hydrated, and rest enough to allow your body to recover after your workouts.

Lastly, don't overlook the importance of mental preparation. Preparing for this assessment is also about setting your mind for the task. Routine workouts, consistent training, and a positive mindset can gear you for the CFA!

The CFA is only one part of the admissions process, though, so make sure you meet the academic and extracurricular criteria as well. Best of luck!
