What is the United States Naval Academy Prep School like?

Could someone please explain what the prep school experience is at the United States Naval Academy? I've heard it's a stepping stone for the academy itself, but what kind of preparation does it really involve?

The United States Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located in Newport, Rhode Island, essentially provides a solid foundation for future success at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). It's a 10-month program that focuses on strengthening the academic and physical abilities of its students, as well as their moral and ethical foundations - essential elements to succeed at the academy.

One major aspect of NAPS is academic preparation. The curriculum includes math, chemistry, physics, English, and IT - courses designed to enhance the students' academic skills and knowledge. These classes presage the rigorous academics at the Naval Academy and aim to arm students with the necessary academic prowess.

Physical training is another significant component of the NAPS experience. Just as at the Naval Academy, physical readiness is a central part of the preparation. Students will participate in morning physical training, intramural sports, and potentially compete on NAPS varsity athletic teams.

Moreover, character development is a key element of the NAPS program. Students will learn about honor, integrity, and respect for others - core values that are integral to a career in the U.S. Navy. This includes training in military customs, courtesies, and regulations, which prepares students for the unique, regimented lifestyle at the Naval Academy.

Generally, the experience at NAPS is demanding but extremely beneficial, as it aims to equip students with the skills they would need to thrive at the Naval Academy. Students join NAPS because they have demonstrated potential but need a bit more preparation before they enter the Naval Academy. Many NAPS students go on to be very successful at the Academy and beyond.

Despite its demanding nature, NAPS is also an environment where students can build lifelong friendships and develop a strong camaraderie with their peers, which is a rewarding experience in and of itself.
