How is the academic year structured at the US Naval Academy?

Could someone explain how the academic year is organized at the US Naval Academy? Are there any unique aspects to their calendar that differ from a traditional college schedule?

Certainly, the academic year at the U.S. Naval Academy is structured into two semesters, similar to a traditional college: Fall and Spring. However, unlike most traditional colleges, the Naval Academy begins with a program called Plebe Summer, which is rigorous summer training that takes place before your first academic year begins.

Plebe Summer generally starts in late June. During these six weeks, new midshipmen (called "Plebes") undergo basic training in seamanship, navigation, infantry drill, rifle marksmanship, and other essential skills.

After Plebe Summer, the regular academic year begins with the fall semester starting in late August — just like at many traditional universities. Midshipmen take core curriculum courses across science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences fields.

Between the fall and spring semesters, there's a winter break, but during these periods, midshipmen often use the time to gain practical experience by participating in additional training operations, internships, or research projects.

The Spring semester typically starts in January, similar to most schools, and ends in May. One notable tradition is Commissioning Week, which coincides with graduation in late May. This week is filled with events to celebrate the graduating Seniors.

The most significant deviation from a typical academic year is the emphasis on summer training. Each summer, midshipmen participate in professional training where they may travel around the globe to serve aboard ships, submarines, and with aviation squadrons, or they may remain in Annapolis for further leadership and academic instruction.

So, while the academic year at the Naval Academy is similar to a traditional college on the surface, there are unique aspects that are quite different, with the focus on training and hands-on experience.
