However, unlike most traditional colleges, the Naval Academy begins with a program called Plebe Summer, which is rigorous summer training that takes place before your first academic year begins.

Plebe Summer generally starts in late June. During these six weeks, new midshipmen (called "Plebes") undergo basic training in seamanship, navigation, infantry drill, rifle marksmanship, and other essential skills.

After Plebe Summer, the regular academic year begins with the fall semester starting in late August — just like at many traditional universities. Midshipmen take core curriculum courses across science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences fields.
