What are the entry requirements for the US Naval Academy?

I'm interested in applying to the US Naval Academy and want to ensure I meet all their entry requirements. Could someone break down what's needed academically and physically? Also, any tips on standing out would be awesome!

The admission requirements for the US Naval Academy are indeed extensive, as it is not only an incredibly selective institution academically, but also requires exemplary physical fitness and moral character.

In terms of academics:

Applicants should have a strong high school curriculum, typically including 4 years of English, Math, and Science (2 years of lab science), and 2 years of a foreign language. It's ideal if you have taken rigorous classes such as APs, IBs, or Honors courses if available at your school. Candidates often rank in the top 20% of their high school class. Keep in mind that precise statistics are not released, and each candidate is reviewed on an individual basis.

Regarding physical fitness:

You will need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) which includes six different exercises: a basketball throw while kneeling, pull-ups (men) or a flexed-arm hang (women), a shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run. It's crucial to practice and prepare for these activities to ensure a good performance.

As well as physical and academic components, there is a moral assessment. You must have no disciplinary records, a strong record of leadership or community service, and a nomination—usually from a member of Congress.

Standing out from other candidates is largely about demonstrating your passion, dedication, and suitability for the naval career. Leadership experiences, such as being a team captain, club president, or occupying any position of responsibility can be beneficial. Similarly, demonstrating interest and knowledge in naval or military affairs through your essay or interview could be advantageous.

Lastly, having a record of endurance, such as participating in a Varsity sport, could also be impressive, given the Naval Academy's emphasis on physical fitness.

Overall, it is essential to understand that being admitted to the US Naval Academy is about more than just academics—it's about proving you have the well-rounded skill set and dedication necessary to succeed in a challenging military environment. Remember, the Naval Academy isn't just an educational institution, but a pathway to a highly disciplined and demanding career in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps.
