Any info on EOD officer path through the US Naval Academy?

I'm considering becoming an EOD officer through the US Naval Academy. Can anyone share insights into this path? What's the training like, and what qualities are they looking for in candidates?

The EOD Officer path via the United States Naval Academy enables you to gain extensive training and experience in explosive disposal techniques and devices. Post-graduation from the academy, prospective EOD officers attend the Basic EOD Technician (Phase 1) at Great Lakes, Illinois where they get indoctrinated on EOD administrative procedures, military ordnance identification, ordnance-related publications, and Naval warfare sites.

The process then continues with the Basic EOD Technician Course (Phase 2) at Eglin AFB, Fl. This course offers theoretical and practical training regarding hazards and identification of U.S. and foreign ammunition, UXO, and IEDs.

To become an EOD candidate, they look for a diverse set of qualities including leadership skills, ability to handle stressful situations, physical fitness, and the powerful intellect to solve complex problems quickly. Due to the dangerous nature of the job, candidates need to exhibit calmness under pressure.

Additionally, within the Naval Academy itself, leadership positions, academic performance, and physical fitness testing scores can play a role in securing an EOD slot after graduation. There's also a clearance aspect, where candidates need to pass a SECRET or TOP SECRET clearance - this looks at your reliability, trustworthiness, and loyalty to the United States.

Since EOD officers work with potentially lethal devices, extensive medical screening is also part of the process. It's important to ensure that one is in robust health, and does not have any conditions that could potentially interfere with the ability to execute duties.

Lastly, a good grasp of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) may prove beneficial given the technical nature of EOD responsibilities.
