Requirements for high school students applying to the US Naval Academy

I'm a junior in high school and considering applying to the US Naval Academy. Could someone lay out the basic high school requirements I need to meet to have a competitive application?

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is one of the most prestigious service academies in the United States, and as such, the application process is quite extensive and highly competitive. Having a deep understanding of what's required will certainly aid in creating a strong application.

For the academic qualifications, you must have a solid high school academic record. The USNA suggests that you complete four years of English and math, and one year each of chemistry and physics. Courses in English should emphasize written and verbal skills, while math courses should be college preparatory and should ideally include geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. Pre-calculus and calculus would be viewed favorably.

Keep in mind that the SAT or ACT is required for applying to the USNA. You should aim to be in at least the top 20-30 percentile nationally on either test. Remember, the USNA does not super score (taking the highest section scores across multiple tests), so you should aim for the best composite score in one sitting.

In terms of physical qualifications, you'll need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), which includes events such as a basketball throw, push-ups, pull-ups/flex arm hang, sit-ups/curl-ups, a shuttle run, and a timed 1-mile run. Before appointment, you must also meet the medical and physical qualifications to be fully admitted.

On the leadership end of things, the USNA places a heavy emphasis on leadership experience and potential. They look for students who have been involved in athletics, clubs, student government, community service, or part-time work. For competitive applicants, it is important to demonstrate stability, leadership, and teamwork through these activities.

Finally, you'll need a nomination, usually from a U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator, or the Vice President or President of the United States. These are often competitive, so it's important to start the process early.

Remember, these are just the basic requirements. Every application to the USNA is multifaceted, and the most competitive applicants excel in academics, leadership, and physical fitness.
