Does the US Naval Academy offer any physical education programs?

I'm curious about the physical education programs at the US Naval Academy. What kind of courses or activities are available for midshipmen to stay fit and active? Are there any unique sports or fitness opportunities that they offer?

The U.S. Naval Academy indeed offers a structured physical education program for all midshipmen, as physical readiness is considered a crucial aspect of their preparation for service. The Physical Education Department’s curriculum is designed to help midshipmen meet fitness standards but also focuses on skill-building and fostering a lifelong commitment to physical fitness.

In terms of specific courses, the program is fairly comprehensive, including swimming and diving, personal defense, small arms training, and hand-to-hand combat. It also has sailing and powerboat handling courses, reflecting the maritime nature of the Navy and the traditions of seamanship.

There's a specific emphasis on physical education courses during Plebe Summer, which is the 7-week indoctrination program for incoming freshmen. These courses, including boxing, wrestling, and swimming, lay the foundation for their physical training in the upcoming years.

In addition to required physical education classes, midshipmen have the opportunity to participate in a selection of competitive varsity sports, from the traditional like football, basketball, and soccer to more unique offerings such as offshore sailing and water polo. Midshipmen may also participate in intramural (within the academy) or club sports if they don't compete at the varsity level.

Unique to the Naval Academy, the Sea Trials and Herndon Monument Climb are two physically challenging and team-building events. The Sea Trials are a 14-hour training exercise, designed to push the plebes (freshmen) to their physical and mental limits. The Herndon Climb is a tradition where the plebes work together to climb a 21-foot granite monument covered in lard to replace a plebe 'dixie-cup hat' at the top with an upperclassman's hat, marking the end of their plebe year.

So, in short, there are many opportunities for midshipmen to participate in physical activity, from structured programs to competitive sports and traditional events.
