Any insights on the US Naval Academy Rifle Team?

I'm a high school junior interested in competitive shooting and considering the US Naval Academy. How competitive is their rifle team, and what opportunities exist for student-athletes in this sport at the academy?

Hello! It's great to hear that you're considering the Naval Academy and have interest in the Rifle Team!

The US Naval Academy is a member of both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC). To break into the team can be quite competitive. The team typically competes in both smallbore (.22 caliber) and air rifle categories and have been quite successful in the past. Traditionally, the team's season runs from October through March, giving athletes ample opportunities to compete in matches.

As a member of the team, the commitment involves more than just shooting. Student-athletes must adhere to stringent practice schedules, team meetings, and travel for events. Exercise, academics and military duty are also priorities. So, if you're considering being part of the team, it's also important to think about time management and balancing various responsibilities that come with life at the academy.

While high school performance is a crucial consideration during recruitment for the team, the most important factor for admission is your ability to meet the Naval Academy's stringent academic and physical standards. The Academy seeks those who excel in all aspects, not just sports. Showcasing leadership skills, a strong academic record, and a passion for service can help balance out the competitiveness of athletic recruitment.

At the Academy, the emphasis isn't just on the sport itself but also on molding future officers of character and integrity. Consequently, involvement in the rifle team - like other sports at the Academy - can contribute significantly to your personal and leadership development.

Don't hesitate to reach out to the team's coach to express your interest and ask any specific questions you might have about the team. Remember, demonstrating interest can often make a positive difference. Best of luck in your pursuits!
