What are the US Naval Academy's service obligations upon graduation?

I'm interested in attending the US Naval Academy and was curious about the service obligations after graduation. How long is the commitment, and what kind of roles do graduates typically take on?

Upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy, students commit to serve a minimum of five years of active military service. The exact length can vary depending on the specific branch and role you opt for.

For example, if you choose an aviation role, the service commitment is longer, normally extending between eight to ten years after completion of flight training. On the other hand, those who pursue careers as Navy SEALs or in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) program commit to extra active duty service time.

In terms of roles, there's quite a variety available, and they span across both the Navy and the Marine Corps. For the Navy, opportunities include Surface Warfare, Submarines, Special Warfare (like the aforementioned Navy SEALs), Naval Aviation (both Pilot and Flight Officer), Naval Reactors, and more. For the Marine Corps, graduates could become Combat Engineers, Infantry Officers, Artillery Officers, and Aviation roles, amongst others.

It's also worth noting that the commitment doesn't end after active duty. Naval Academy graduates also have a few years of service in the Inactive Reserve, where they can be called back into service in times of national need.

All in all, attending the Naval Academy involves a significant commitment, so you'll want to think thoroughly about whether you're ready to serve your country in this manner. But the vast array of opportunities also ensures you'll likely find a role that aligns with your interests and career aspirations.
