What is the Naval Academy Foundation School?

The U.S. Naval Academy Foundation offers a program that helps prepare students for the academic rigors of the Naval Academy through a post-high school year-long prep school experience. The objective of this program is to ensure that selected candidates are sufficiently oriented and prepared with the enhanced academic and physical skills necessary for success at the academy.

To be considered for the Foundation program, a student must first apply to the Naval Academy. If the student isn't admitted directly but shows potential for future admission, the Naval Academy Admissions Board may choose to sponsor the student via the Foundation program. So, essentially, selection for the Foundation program is a type of nomination that comes from the Naval Academy itself.

The Foundation program participants, known as Midshipman Candidates, don't study at the Naval Academy during their year in the program. Instead, the Foundation has arrangements with about 15 participating civilian prep schools that Midshipman Candidates can choose from. The civilian prep school curriculum focuses primarily on strengthening math and science fundamentals, along with emphasis on English and study skills.

Another part of the Foundation program involves physical preparation for the academy. Emphasis is placed on the development of both physical skills and discipline, with fitness programs coupled with team athletics to cultivate both aspects.

Lastly, the Foundation program is not just about academic and physical preparation but also focuses on character development. Behavioral norms, time management, attention to detail, and adherence to routine are all cultivated during this program.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that successful completion of the Foundation program doesn't guarantee admission into the Naval Academy. However, historically, about 80% of the students who complete the Foundation program successfully gain acceptance into the Naval Academy.
