Financial aid options available for nontraditional college students

I'm considering taking a gap year after high school or attending college later on. What kind of grants or scholarships are available for nontraditional students like me who aren't following the typical high school-to-college path?

Nontraditional students often have a unique set of financial aid options available. For starters, every U.S. student, regardless of age or circumstances, should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for federal grants, loans, and work-study opportunities. The Pell Grant, for instance, is need-based and available to undergraduates of all ages.

There are many privately-funded scholarships specifically for non-traditional students too. Organizations such as the Association for Nontraditional Students in Higher Education (ANTSHE) offer scholarships specifically for students who are returning to school after a gap. Some colleges even offer scholarships specifically for nontraditional students on their campuses.

Additionally, many professional associations and industries offer scholarships or tuition assistance to those looking to retrain or advance in a particular field. If you're considering a specific career or industry, it's worth seeing what scholarships they offer related to that.

Lastly, some states have special grant or scholarship programs for nontraditional students. For instance, some states have created specific programs to offer tuition assistance to adults returning to college.

Remember to research and apply early in order to maximize your financial aid opportunities.
