Is the SAT an IQ test?

Hi, I've been hearing different things about the SAT and wanted to clear this up - is the SAT really an IQ test? What skills does it really measure? And how do colleges view it during the admissions process?

Hi, the SAT is not considered an IQ test. Rather, it is a standardized test designed to measure a student's academic readiness for college. The SAT focuses on assessing skills in math, reading, and writing, with an additional optional essay section. While the test does measure some cognitive abilities, it doesn't test the full range of abilities and skills that an IQ test typically covers.

As for how colleges view the SAT during the admissions process, most colleges and universities (at least in the US) have traditionally used SAT scores as one of the factors in their assessment of applicants. However, the importance of SAT scores can vary depending on the institution. Some schools use a student's SAT scores to determine if they meet a certain academic threshold, while others may place more emphasis on other aspects of a student's profile, such as their GPA or extracurricular activities.

It's worth noting that in recent years, an increasing number of colleges have adopted test-optional or test-flexible policies, which means they no longer require SAT or ACT scores for admission. But if you choose to submit your scores, they will still be taken into consideration as part of your overall application.
