When to start application for the Naval Academy?

I'm a junior interested in attending the Naval Academy, but I am unsure when to begin my application. Can anyone share a timeline or any tips on getting started with the application process?

The application process for the U.S. Naval Academy is quite different from that of a traditional university. It’s a multifaceted process that requires ample time, as you'll need to meet a series of medical, physical, and academic qualifications, as well as obtain a nomination, usually from a U.S. Representative or a Senator. Here's a basic rundown of when you should do each step:

Right now: Begin preparing. The Naval Academy considers your entire high school academic record, so continue focusing on your GPA and maintaining rigorous course loads. Start building leadership roles in clubs, sports, or other organizations that interest you, as these experiences are valuable.

Late junior year (Winter/Spring): Begin the Naval Academy’s pre-candidate questionnaire, which is the first part of the application. It opens in April of your junior year. This will ask for basic information about you, your academics, and athletic participation. If the admissions board likes what they see, they'll officially open your candidate file.

Junior year/Senior Year (Summer/Fall): Secure a nomination. The nomination process is actually separate from the Naval Academy application. You’ll need to apply to all possible nominating sources as each has their own process and deadline. These usually include your local Congressional representative, your two U.S. Senators, and the Vice President of the U.S.

Senior Year (Fall/Winter): Complete the rest of your application, including the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) and medical examination. The CFA is a physical fitness test that includes various exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, and a one-mile run. The medical exam will be scheduled for you once you've passed the initial stages of the application.

Senior Year (January 31): This is the application deadline. However, try to get it in as early as possible.

Remember, both the Naval Academy application and the nomination application are extensive and time-consuming, so starting early is advisable. Good luck!
