What is the Naval Academy Looking For in Applicants?

I'm really interested in applying to the Naval Academy and want to know what qualities and accomplishments they value in applicants. What aspects of a candidate's profile do they focus on during admissions?

The US Naval Academy looks for certain qualities in prospective applicants. These include:

1. Excellent Academics: A strong commitment to academics, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields, demonstrated by high GPA and standardized test scores, is desirable. Advanced coursework like AP classes in these areas can strengthen your application. Strong overall academic performance is crucial.

2. Physical Fitness: As it is a military academy, physical fitness is crucial. All applicants have to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), which includes various physical tasks, such as a basketball throw, pull-ups or flex arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run.

3. Leadership: The Naval Academy values leadership skills, and they want to see that reflected in your extracurricular activities. You might show this through roles in student government, sports team captaincies, or leadership in community service efforts.

4. Character: The Naval Academy seeks individuals of the utmost character, who are committed to serving their country. You might show this through letters of recommendation, community service, or your personal essay.

5. Commitment to Service: The Naval Academy requires a minimum of five years of service post-graduation, so a demonstrated interest in military service or a long-term commitment to serving one’s community or country can strengthen an application.

Remember also, to apply to the Naval Academy, you will need a nomination, usually from a member of Congress. Although the application process is unique and rigorous, it's also a great opportunity for personal growth and preparation for the service commitment post-graduation.
