What's the best way to get into the Merchant Marine Academy?

I'm a high school junior considering a career in the maritime industry and thinking about applying to the Merchant Marine Academy. What are the key factors for admission, and how can I improve my chances of getting accepted?

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) admission is competitive and requires meticulous preparation. Here are key steps to take and factors you'd want to consider.

1. Academics and Test Scores: Strong academic performance in high school is critical. Specifically, a solid foundation in mathematics and physical sciences due to USMMA's engineering-focused curricula. Highlight your performance in these subjects throughout high school and tailor your classes to take advanced courses if possible, such as AP Physics or Calculus.

Currently, the USMMA requires the SAT or ACT score for your application, and while there isn't a strict cutoff, stronger scores always increase your chances. As of now, the middle 50% of SAT scores for incoming midshipmen range from 1220 to 1370 (math + evidence-based reading and writing), and the middle 50% of ACT composite scores range from 26 to 30. Rigorous test prep is recommended to align with these ranges.

2. Physical Fitness: Considering that life at a military academy is both physically and mentally demanding, applicants must pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) which includes six exercises: basketball push-ups, pull-ups/flexed-arm hang, timed shuttle run, modified sit-ups (crunches), push-ups and a one-mile run. Regular physical fitness routine to improve your endurance and strength should help you succeed in this area.

3. Leadership and Extra-curricular Activities: Leadership roles in school clubs, sports teams, community service, or part-time jobs showcase your ability to manage responsibilities and work in a team. For instance, serving as class president or sports team captain would be valued by the academy.

4. Letters of Recommendation: Strong letters of recommendation from your teachers or other mentors can significantly boost your application. Seek out those who can speak best about your academic, leadership, and moral qualities.

5. Nomination: You need a nomination to apply to USMMA. This can be obtained from U.S. Representatives, U.S. Senators, and the Vice President, among others. Early engagement with these nominating sources can better your chances of securing a nomination.

Lastly, one thing to note is that USMMA also evaluates your "character" during the admission process, they want individuals of moral integrity. So, behaving ethically and responsibly is equally important as these other aspects. If you can show your passion for maritime service and commitment to the core areas outlined above, you'll be on a strong path towards a successful USMMA application. Good luck!
