How do elite junior golfers secure Division 1 scholarships?

I'm part of my high school's golf team and am curious about how elite junior golfers successfully get Division 1 scholarships. What does the recruitment process look like and what kind of performances or skills are recruiters looking for?

For an elite junior golfer seeking a Division I scholarship, there will be several key aspects to focus on.

To start, high-achieving student-athletes should be demonstrating their skills as early as 9th grade or even before. This is not to say that you must be a top-tier player immediately, but the earlier you start demonstrating potential, the more opportunities will be there for you.

Performance in tournaments, especially junior golf tournaments, is an important part of showcasing your talent. Coaches want to see that you can perform under pressure and that you have real-world match experience. High-ranking performance in national tournaments like the U.S. Junior Amateur or the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournaments looks particularly good on a resume.

Equally as important as your golf stats is your academic performance. Many colleges and universities require certain GPA standards to be met and test scores to be achieved. Remember, as a student-athlete, the "student" comes first.

Your skill elements are also key. Coaches are going to be looking at things like your tee shots, approach shots, chipping, putting, and other golfing skills that indicate your overall level of play. They will want to see consistent improvement and a degree of technical skills.

Lastly, build a relationship with the coaches you're interested in playing for. Reach out to them and send a sports resume detailing your achievements, skills, as well as your academic standing. Many coaches will appreciate your interest and be more likely to follow your progression. Take part in their summer camps or programs if you can, as this can be a great way to get in-person exposure.

Remember, while there's a lot of competition out there, many colleges offer golf scholarships, so the key is to find a program that suits your skills, academic aspirations, and other personal preferences. This in-depth knowledge and ability to compete at high levels can be what ultimately secures you the Division I scholarships as an elite junior golfer.
