What are the entrance requirements for the Merchant Marine Academy?

I'm a high school junior considering applying to the Merchant Marine Academy. I'm curious about what the entrance requirements are and how competitive it is to get in. Can anyone share insights on what I should focus on in my application?

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) does have a fairly rigorous admissions process, which includes academic, physical, and medical criteria, as well as a nomination, usually from a member of Congress.

First, academically, the academy doesn't publicize exact GPA or standardized test score cutoffs, but successful applicants typically have strong academic records. As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, while the USMMA is not test-blind, it has adopted a temporary test-optional policy that allows applicants to choose whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores. Just note that if you opt to submit scores, there's no preference between the SAT and ACT.

Beyond strong grades and test scores (if submitting), you'll also need to pass a Candidate Fitness Assessment, which includes exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, a basketball throw from a kneeling position, running, and swimming. You must also meet certain medical eligibility requirements, and the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) will determine your medical suitability for military service.

There's also a nomination process. Generally, these are received from a U.S. representative or senator, but other nominating sources are possible. You should also seek to secure a nomination from the Vice President of the United States, who can nominate candidates at large.

It's also important to note that the academy looks for demonstrated leadership ability. This can be through participation in extracurricular activities, sports, community service, or holding leadership positions in those activities.

Finally, remember that a commitment is required upon graduation. Each graduate is required to serve five years in the U.S. maritime industry with eight years of service as an officer in any reserve unit of the U.S. armed forces.

Given these requirements, it's clear that acceptance to USMMA is competitive. It's less about focusing on an individual aspect of your application and more about presenting a well-rounded and compelling case for your admission — strong academics, leadership abilities, and meeting physical and medical standards.
