What do students generally do at the US Merchant Marine Academy?

I'm interested in attending the US Merchant Marine Academy and would love to know what students typically do there. Is the focus primarily on maritime studies, or are there other activities and learning opportunities?

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) provides a diverse curriculum that goes beyond maritime studies, although maritime-related courses certainly play a prominent role. The Academy primarily readies its students to serve America's marine transportation and defense needs both at sea and ashore.

In terms of academics, USMMA offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Marine Engineering, Marine Transportation, Maritime Logistics and Security, Shipyard Management, and Marine Engineering Systems. Along with these core majors, students are required to take courses in a variety of subjects, including mathematics, naval science, humanities, and physical education. This combination equips students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for a broad array of career paths.

Furthermore, students at USMMA complete a Sea Year as a part of their curriculum. This involves spending time at sea, accumulating practical knowledge, and gaining hands-on experience in the maritime industry. During this time, they can travel around the world on commercial vessels to further their understanding of the maritime industry.

Extracurricular activities are an integral part of the Academy’s program as well. USMMA has a variety of student clubs spanning cultural and professional interests. Athletics also play a notable role at the Academy, with sports like football, swimming, soccer, and others included in their NCAA Division III sports programs.

Lastly, a unique aspect of a USMMA education is the U.S. Coast Guard license that midshipmen can earn. This qualifies them to serve as officers on American-flagged merchant ships, which can be beneficial in their post-graduation careers.

Overall, though the USMMA has a strong emphasis on maritime studies, it offers a comprehensive academic and practical experience that is enriched with diverse extracurricular activities.
