Finding Music Scholarships for College Students

I'm passionate about music and want to pursue it in college. Does anyone know of any scholarships for music majors or musicians? Tips for standing out in applications would also be awesome!

There are several music scholarships out there for college students, especially for those who intend to major in music. Top of mind, I can think of scholarships such as the John Lennon Scholarships which are sponsored by the BMI Foundation, the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) offers multiple scholarships for various musical disciplines, and scholarships like the Davidson Fellowship for gifted young musicians, among many others.

A key aspect to standing out is showcasing your passion and talent in music. Being able to demonstrate not just your skill, but your dedication, is crucial. This means actively participating in music-related activities outside school like statewide orchestras, ensembles, performing at recitals, etc.

Examples of your work will also help you stand out. If you compose your own pieces, recordings or sheet music could be a great addition to your application. If you perform, videos of performances might be useful.

Remember to double check the requirements of each scholarship. Some may ask for auditions while others might require essays. Use these opportunities to exhibit not only your technical prowess but perhaps more importantly, your personal connection to music.

In your essays, be sure to share your music journey and the impact it has on your life. Discuss your plans for the future and how you intend to utilize your music education. Also, if you've had any music-related experiences that challenged you or helped you grow (i.e., a particularly difficult performance or piece), sharing these anecdotes could also make your application feel more compelling and personal.

The application process can be intense but keep in mind that these scholarships aim to support students like you who are passionate about pursuing music in college. Good luck with your applications!
