What majors can you pursue at the United States Merchant Marine Academy?

I'm looking into the United States Merchant Marine Academy as a potential college choice. I'd love to know more about the different majors available and if they have strong programs in engineering or other technical fields.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) offers a unique opportunity to its students, as it has a limited but very specific set of degrees. The focus of their majors is largely around maritime and marine industries which are closely tied to the country's naval and maritime history.

USMMA offers five bachelor of science degrees:

1. Marine Transportation: This major focuses on the practical aspects of operating and managing commercial ships.

2. Maritime Logistics and Security: This program deals with the operation, regulation, and management of the transport industries. That includes shipping lines, ports, and terminals, and it provides an understanding of the supply chains related to maritime transport.

Regarding your interest in engineering fields:

3. Marine Engineering: Students will study many facets of marine machinery, controls, and systems operations and will gain a firm base from which to move into important and reliable positions.

4. Marine Engineering Systems: This program covers a wide field of engineering including mechanical, electrical, nuclear, and civil engineering.

5. Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management: This major prepares students to work in ship construction, repair, and conversion facilities, or similar industries.

All of these programs are designed to provide a strong technical foundation that will serve graduates in the marine industry or any industry that could benefit from a solid base in mechanical, electrical, or nuclear technology.

Keep in mind that all students at the USMMA graduate with both a bachelor of science degree and a Merchant Marine Credential (MMC), as well as an officer's commission in the United States Armed Forces. This opens up a variety of career paths both at sea and onshore.

As you can see, while the range of majors at the USMMA is narrower than at a traditional university, they're highly specialized and industry-focused. This can ensure you'll be well-prepared for a future in marine or related industries.
